Thiago Santos may have missed the start of Bellator’s second heavyweight tournament, but all hope is not lost.
Bellator announced Thursday that “Big Monster” will lock horns with Josh Burns in a heavyweight tournament alternate bout at Saturday’s Bellator 53 card. The fight was made as a result of semifinalist Mike Hayes receiving a 60-day medical suspension from the Louisiana State Boxing and Wrestling Commission following his first-round split decision win over Neil Grove at Bellator 52 last week.
As a result of the suspension, Hayes may not be cleared to compete when the tournament resumes on Oct. 29. If Hayes' injuries prevent him from fighting, either Santos or Burns will step in to face Blagoi Ivanov in the semis. Santos was originally slated to compete in the tournament's quarterfinals, but he was replaced at the last minute by Zak Jensen due to visa issues.
A veteran of the defunct Rio Heroes vale tudo promotion, Santos (Pictured) has only tasted defeat once as a professional, submitting to an Alexey Oleinik rear-naked choke in 2009. Following the loss, the heavyweight posted back-to-back victories over Geronimo dos Santos and Ubiratan Marinho Lima in Amazon Fight competition last year. “Big Monster” has yet to compete in 2011.
After beginning his career a perfect 5-0, Burns has dropped four of his last five bouts. Fighting out of Detroit, Burns made his Bellator debut in his most recent outing, fighting current tournament semifinalist Eric Prindle tooth-and-nail before the fight was stopped by the doctor at the conclusion of the second round. A five-year pro, Burns owns three of his six career wins via knockout.

Bellator heavyweight Hayes' tourney spot in jeopardy with medical suspension

Mike Hayes passed the first gauntlet of Bellator's season-five heavyweight tournament, but he may have taken too much damage to continue.
Hayes (16-4 MMA, 2-1 BFC) has been issued a preliminary suspension of 60 days by the Louisiana Boxing and Wrestling Commission following his split decision over Neil Grove (11-4-1 MMA, 3-2 BFC) at Bellator 52, which hosted the quarterfinals of the eight-man competition.
A final report due soon will determine whether Hayes suffered a fractured orbital in the bout.
Although Hayes today told MMAjunkie.com that he suffered a concussion and was vomiting afterward, his suspension did not address such an injury.
"I don't think he suffered a concussion," LBWC chairman Alvin Topham said today. "We're just concerned with the kid's orbital."
Bellator CEO Rebney said he's waiting for the commission's final ruling on the suspension before Hayes loses his tournament spot. If the suspension stands, the winner of a yet-undisclosed alternate bout at Bellator 53 will move on to meet Blagoi Ivanov in the tournament semifinals.
"My hope against hope is that it's not what its been reported to be," Rebney said of Hayes' initial suspension. "But if it is, and it's 60 (days), then obviously Mike would not be able to move forward in this tournament just because of the time restraints we're faced with."
The tournament semifinals are set for Bellator 56, which takes place Oct. 29 at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan. As always, MTV2 airs main card action while Spike.com streams preliminary bouts.

This weekend: Bellator 52
Bellator 52 will be held in L’Auberge du Lac Casino and Resort,Lake Charles, Louisiana, United States or can be see live on MTV2
The Bellator heavyweight contestants are all eyeing to win the 100,000 and a shot to the Heavyweight title that belong to Cole Konrad
Most of the guys I have never heard of, let alone seen them fight. Knowing this is a Bellator card and Bjorn Rebney always puts on a very good card i.e. Bellator 51, we are going to have some fireworks
The most recognizable names in the card should be Neil Grove and Abe Wagner.
The South African Neil Grove has fought in the UFC (Once) and have fought a number of former or current UFC talent, The likes of Rob Broughton, Eddie Sanchez, James Mcsweeney, james Thompson.
His last fight against Zak Jensen was a fans dream. A war. A bloodbath. Zak Jensen went for a kneebar, so too Neil Grove and in an awkward position, the both of them start throwing punches. Zak Jensen to the Body, Neil Grove to the head. Neither would budge until Neil landed the bigger shots and He won by TKO in the second minute of the first round
The other recognizable name for me is Abe Wagner. I saw one of his fights where he fought former UFC champ, Tim Sylvia and the dude beat Tim in under a minute. An upset. The biggest win for Abe Wagner. But the dude ain't no sloucher too. He fought Travis Browne who is currently in the UFC for the VFC Heavyweight title but lost to him by way of Knock Out
Heavyweight Tournament Quarterfinals
Neil Grove vs Mike Hayes
Ron Sparks vs Mark Holata
Blagoi Ivanov vs Zak Jensen
Abe Wagner vs Eric Prindle
